You may have heard from people who do not have complete knowledge about Search Engine algorithms that leaving your link on an “inner page” that is new or has a low or 0 Page Rank inside of a high Page Rank domain will do your site no good. This is a fallacy.
To show that the above statement is false, just do a search in Google for the word backlinks without quotes. You will see an article written by me, Angela V. Edwards, on the GoArticles article directory. I have only used backlinks on inner pages of high Page Rank authority sites for this article.
My article currently holds the NUMBER TWO position in Google out of 13.7 million completing sites, just below Wikipedia. I have done this by using the inner pages of high ranking websites. You can also do a search for the keyword Angela. You will find my site in the top five out of almost 80 million competing sites. I also only used these "inner page" backlinks for that webpage as well.
Matt Cutts, an engineer for Google who acts as Google's Public Relations contact person was asked about the above statement but he couldn’t give a straight answer due to the question being too close to Google’s algorithm.

Stephan Spencer: OK. So, I guess, a follow on to that would be:
a .edu and .gov link, and so forth, has, typically, a more pristine link neighborhood, so it is not just about the PageRank, right? The link neighborhood comes into play.
Matt Cutts: That is a little bit of a "secret sauce" question, so I am not going to go into how much we do trust that sort of stuff.
Stephan Spencer: OK. I am going to slap my wrist now. Ouch,ouch!
Matt Cutts: [laughing] If you were to look for this much movement in Google from any other company, it would cost you HUNDREDS of dollars a month. Take a look around the Internet and you will see that this is true.
